Unite FC Horn of Africa Refugee Team to tour Brazil 

The most talented Victorian Horn of Africa football youth will pit themselves against the best in Brazil after accepting an invitation to tour from Brazilian giants Fluminense Football Club and Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.

Unite FC is made up of the best Under 18 players from the Victorian Horn of Africa refugee communities including Somali, Eritrean, Ethiopian, South Sudanese, Kenyan and Oromo. In addition this years touring party has two Victorian Indigenous players. 

The Unite FC squad play in Football Federation Victoria leagues and live in Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Banyule, Hume, Wyndham and Darebin council areas of Melbourne. 

The Unite FC tour to Brazil is the third tour organised by the Australian Somali Football Association and Football Federation Victoria with previous tours to Spain to compete in the Madrid Cup and the Mediterranean Cup.

The tour runs from August 13-28, 2013 with the highlight an opportunity for the players to meet and train with Brazilian legend ‘Zico’

The Unite FC team is managed and mentored by Ahmed Dini who is a Community Engagement Officer for Football Federation Victoria and a current People of Australia Ambassador.

“This is our third tour and this year the team wanted to tour Brazil the spiritual home of football and Joga Bonito” said Mr Dini.

“Unite FC is a pathway team and the tour is a reward for our young community players for playing in the FFV club system and a way for the players to see first hand what it takes to be a professional player.”

“We also use the tour to develop community coaches who play a crucial role in mentoring the team” Mr Dini added.

Partners for the Unite FC – Brazil tour include Bendigo Bank Flemington Community Branch, Range Resources, The Moloney Group, Victorian Multicultural Commission, Moonee Valley City Council, City of Melbourne, Victoria Police, Australian Federal Police, Red Elephant Projects, Flemington Flemington Rotary,  Community Centre, Parkville Panthers and Football Federation Victoria’s United Through Football Program.
